So in light of a recent and very hateful blog making its course through tumblr cosplayers, picking them off and stripping them of the fun that is cosplay, I turned back to one of my very first Homestuck meetups. I think it was there that I realized what cosplay is about. Yes, it can be competitive, fancy, expensive, and ultra-uppity, but that is not what I’m talking about. “Cosplay right or don’t do it at all” is crap to me. No, cosplay is about having fun, dressing up and appreciating a comic, movie, or story for what it is, making and seeing friends, forming bonds in a overall safe community and just being free to be whatever the heck you want! There is no such enlightening feeling quite like this, when a big group of dorky kids dressed up gets together, smiles at people they may have never met before, and realize they are safe and happy. That’s amazing! I hope anyone who has ever been bullied or harassed for not being good enough, realize that you are only truly good when there is a genuine smile plastered across your face and your hobby isn’t some competition. Cosplay= Costumes+ And a hella amount of PLAY!!
